Dovecot

Dovecot is an email server that, in this configuration, fetches mail from multiple email accounts and makes it available for local processing. Combined with Goose CLI, it enables AI-powered email analysis and digest generation without sending your email to external services.

The system runs on a cron schedule, fetching new mail from configured accounts and storing it locally. Goose then analyzes the day's email, identifying important messages, filtering noise, and generating a digest that highlights what actually matters. This runs daily at 3:15 AM, so you wake up to a curated summary rather than an overwhelming inbox.

Email as Data Source

Email contains valuable information buried in noise. Newsletters, notifications, receipts, and actual correspondence all arrive in the same inbox. Manually sorting through it daily is time-consuming and easy to defer. Automated analysis with AI can extract signal from noise, categorize by importance, and surface what needs attention.

The key is that this analysis happens on your infrastructure using your AI models. Your email isn't sent to OpenAI or Anthropic for processing. It's analyzed locally by Ollama Help through Goose, keeping your correspondence private while still benefiting from AI capabilities.

Integration with Workflow

The digest generation is part of a broader automation strategy where AI handles routine analysis tasks in the background. Email digests run at 3:15 AM. RSS feed analysis runs at 3:30 AM. Log monitoring runs hourly. Each task generates a summary that you can review when convenient rather than interrupting your workflow with real-time notifications.

This batch processing approach works well for information that doesn't require immediate action. Email can wait a few hours for analysis. News digests don't need to be real-time. Log patterns are more useful when analyzed over time rather than alert-by-alert. The automation handles the tedious work of sorting and summarizing, leaving you with curated information.
