Currently no longer used because I don't have a desktop, my daily driver is my Steam Deck, home server, and work laptop
CachyOS Desktop Edition
CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It focuses on speed and security optimizations. Available Desktop Environments and Window Managers out of the box are;
- KDE
- GNOME
- Xfce
- i3wm
- Wayfire
- LXQt
- OpenBox
- Cinnamon
- COSMIC
- UKUI
- LXDE
- MATE
- Budgie
- Qtile
- Hyprland
- Sway
I currently have COSMIC DE, but am relatively dissatisfied with it and have enjoyed the KDE Plasma on my Steam Deck and am formatting a USB for live install right now 2025-09-16. Things I've disliked about my DE:
- Settings seem lack luster
- UI does not integrate with other services too well
- requires some custom tweaking I don't care to do
- Launcher, Applications, and super all do essentially the same thing, and none of them pull up necessarily what I want
But what really broke the camel's back was installing the Obsidian AppImage. I installed it and created a desktop application from the AppImage to set it to the launcher, and still can not find the app in the default launcher. Plus, I've familiarized myself with it from the Steam Deck, so I'd like to unify interface across devices... Looking at you Pixel 9 Pro XL.
CachyOS Handheld Edition
2025-09-16 I discovered CachyOS has a handheld edition that is comparable to SteamOS, by claim. I am tempted to try it and see if it's immutable like the SteamOS distro is.
